Hailing from a small village in Punjab province of India, Ashwani secured bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1975 and joined Air India in 1976. Got his AME licence in 1980 and worked in Major and Line Maintenance thru' 1980s after getting endorsements on all Boeing and Airbus aircraft in Air India's fleet. After doing assignments in Singapore (1984-87) and Abu Dhabi (1992-95), he worked as Shift Incharge in BOM before switching over from maintenance to Engineering services - Quality & Safety Management in 1999. After doing another assignment in London (2005-07) as Regional Manager (Engineering) - UK & Europe, he was appointed Head of Quality in Air India Express, newly created low cost arm of Air India in 2008. After superannuating in 2013, Ashwani did his second stint in airline industry as SVP Engineering & Maintenance with a regional Indian airline - Air Costa - from 2013 to 2017. He has been working as an aviation consultant since 2018.
Over a long aviation career spanning 43 years, Ashwani has been involved with all aspects of aviation engineering. He has carved a niche for himself as a conference speaker, presenter and moderator. Starting with his maiden presentation at King's college, London in 2006, he has attended 50 + international conferences all over the globe and made presentations on a plethora of topics covering entire gamut of Airline/MRO engineering. He presented a research paper on ICAO SMS at the International Conference on Safety by Design in 2014.
Ashwani has been nominated on many commitees and fora by Govt. of India's aviation regulator - DGCA. He worked with Aircraft Engineer's International (AEI) from 1989 to 1996 rising to the position of Vice Chairman. He is also a life member of Aeronautical Society and is presently executive council member of BOM branch of the society.
